Welcome Statement

Columbia College Chicago is proud to be hosting the 37th annual meeting of the Southern Graphics Council. On behalf of the entire Columbia community, allow me to welcome you to our vibrant urban campus in the heart of Chicago's South Loop. While here, we hope you'll take advantage of not only the conference-related activities in the immediate vicinity, but also of the dozens of galleries, exhibitions, performances, and restaurants that are only a short “el” ride away.

Of course, an event of this magnitude would not have been possible without the long hours put in by the people whose names, photos, and bios appear below. If you see any of them here at the conference, I hope you'll join me in offering them thanks for their hard work.

Enjoy your visit.

clark

Dean Clark

I have worked for Graphic Chemical & Ink Company since 1968 - with a brief hiatus (almost 4 years) to travel the World courtesy of my uncle. Sadly it was my Uncle Sam, and I wasn't too thrilled about the places that he chose to send me. My wife and I have run Graphic Chemical for many years, and have enjoyed the travel that comes with the position. We get to meet our customers (and the occasional vendor) from all over the World

Ed O Neil

My formal education has been in the field of Civil Engineering which supported my career as a concrete materials research engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 33 years. All my training as an artist is either self taught or learned through workshops. I pursue printmaking as my primary medium, and water color and oil painting when I have free time.

My study of printmaking extends back to 1972 when I studied etching from Dennis Davenport and realized I had the patience and technical curiosity to etch an image into a piece of metal. Most of you know me as the Product Fair guy. In 1988 I met Stephen Cook who was, at the time or had just been, president of the Southern Graphics Council. He asked me to join SGC and I agreed, asking him in return what I could do to help. He suggested the idea of having a product fair at conference and asked if I would organize it. I agreed and in March of 1989 in Birmingham we had our first vendor show in a painting studio at UAB. Six vendors came. Even though it was small, the fair was well received. Throughout the 1990's and the 2000's I continued to organize the Council's product fairs and have now organized 20 of them. Today the fair has grown 600 percent to attract 36-40 vendors and remains highly popular with conference attendees. I was elected as an Honorary Member of the Southern Graphics Council in 2008 for my service to the growth and evolution of the SGC. I also served on the SGC Board of Directors as its treasurer for two years in the early 1990's.

He has held a number of research and lecturing positions in the UK, Europe, and North America, and engages in international research collaborations. His works take form as digital wall drawings, etched metal sculptures, and series of prints. Information and transformation, as well as simulated versus real space are key issues of his abstract art. HIs work is shown internationally and raises fundamental questions of human perception; it emphasizes information as the new paradigm of a contemporary aesthetic
