This course will study in depth the art and science of motion picture marketing for the major studio films as well as the smaller independent films that are released today. Film marketing encompasses different areas of responsibility and expertise, which include advertising, publicity, promotion, market research and merchandising and we will study how they all work together in bringing a movie into the marketplace. The course will examine how a marketing campaign is created, how strategies differ for studio and independent films, the process of how the movie trailer and poster is created, the costs of advertising, the power of publicity and the importance of finding the right hook and target audience for niche films. This course provides an inside look into the economic and power structures behind the scenes which help determine which movies are made, distributed and marketed to the public. [Elective]
