Echo magazine is a student-produced, award-winning publication
of the Journalism Department of Columbia College Chicago. It is a
four-color magazine produced twice yearly, during the spring and
fall semesters, by students in the College Magazine Workshop course.
Two instructors and approximately 15-20 students are enrolled in the
Workshop course. Other Columbia students contribute to Echo in the
areas of writing, photography, illustration, graphic design and Web
site design. Echo magazine carries paid advertising, and has a
circulation of 15,000 per semester.
Echo covers topics of interest to college students in Chicago,
particularly those in the South Loop. The coverage reflects the
popular culture and issues that matter to these students.
The College Magazine Workshop course is where Echo is created. This class introduces Columbia students to the experience of
working on a real-world consumer magazine, within the teaching
framework of a college course. Echo is created under the leadership of
two advisers, with the intention of developing student leadership
skills as well as teamwork and problem-solving skills along with
journalism training and experience. Students are expected to work in
groups as well as on their own. Each individual is expected to use
several skill sets they have learned at Columbia, including meeting
deadlines, writing, editing, design, desktop publishing, and print
production.
Echo exemplifies Columbia College Chicago’s mission to "educate
students who communicate creatively and shape the public's perceptions
of issues and events and who will author the culture of their times"
and to "conduct education in close relationship to a vital urban
reality and serve important civic purpose by active engagement in the
life and culture of the city of Chicago." The Journalism Department
believes that the hands-on experience students receive in the Workshop
— and the resulting clips of their work — is a unique and
invaluable education. Few undergraduate college journalism programs
produce four-color, consumer-style magazines such as Echo, and the
Department is proud to offer this opportunity to Columbia students.
