Course Description: History of Photography II*: 1920 to the Present

Course examines photography' central role in both reflecting and shaping the cultural, social, political, economic, and scientific context of 20th and 21st centuries. In addition to examing the medium's major movements and practitioners within the context of the social, cultural, and political pressures of the day, the course will also emphasize the developing historiography, theory, and criticism of the medium. Students will be introduced to various methods of historical investigation through a balance of lectures, discussions, field trips to view historical photographic objects, primary and secondary source readings, group projects, writing assignments, and/or tests.
